Purpose. This procedure describes how every treatment, medication and therapy given to a Silverstride horse is authorised, recorded and checked against withholding periods.

1.Scope

This procedure applies to all staff, veterinarians, farriers, dentists and therapists who give any treatment, medication, supplement or therapy to a horse on any Silverstride property or at a race meeting.

2.Authorisation

Prescription medications must only be given on veterinary direction. Over-the-counter products and supplements must be on the approved products list held by the Veterinary Liaison and Welfare Manager. No product will be given to a horse that is not on the list without written approval.

3.Recording

The person treating the horse must create the entry in the Treatment and Medication Log before the treatment is given. The entry must include the horse, date and time, product, dose, route, reason, the person treating, the authorising veterinarian if any, and the withholding period. Entries must never be deleted; corrections must be made as a new entry that refers to the original.

  • Horse name and identification
  • Product, batch and dose
  • Route and site
  • Withholding period and clear date
  • Person treating and authoriser

4.Withholding periods

The withholding period must be taken from the veterinarian's direction or the product label, whichever is longer, and the clear date entered in the log. The Racing Manager must check the log before any acceptance and will not accept a horse whose clear date has not passed.

5.Stock and storage

The medication room must be locked at all times when unattended. A stock count must be done every Monday and reconciled with the log. Discrepancies must be reported to the Veterinary Liaison and Welfare Manager the same day.

6.Audit

The Veterinary Liaison and Welfare Manager will audit the log against stock and the race entries each month and will report findings to the General Manager. Stewards may inspect the log at any time.
